This week, we’ve been lucky to have Mike Wallis, our US Senior Researcher come and visit the UK Head Office and hang with the team for the week and share his expertise.
Based in sunny Los Angeles as our US representative, Mike brings years of expertise to the Newsflare team. Mike has worked extensively in the TV production industry throughout his career, before choosing a new path in 2009 to become a pioneer in the viral video space. During his time at Newsflare alone, Mike has acquired some of the biggest trending viral videos to hit the web and broadcast media.
Some of you may have been contacted by him or may well be in the future if he finds your video footage compelling!
Working in the US, Mike works by researching trending viral videos, having a particular eye for what could make the news, most recently and notably one of the biggest hits this year is Baby Leopold as he sees his mum for the first time. A heartwarming video, that makes people go “Arghhhhhh” whilst also raising awareness for a rare disorder called Oculocutaneous Albinism helped this video make the news globally.
Up next as one of Mike’s all time favourites is a dramatic video of a basketball getting stuck on the basket’s rim in the final second of a tightly fought US game. The footage, captured in St. Mary’s, Kansas shows a player shooting the ball and it getting stuck in tense final moments.
The crowd are heard screaming and shouting while the players stare – with one collapsing to the floor. There was only one point separating the two teams. The chances of this happening are one in a million and makes for pure classic viral video viewing!
Next up, is one many of us can relate to. Beer pong with a spin on it. Megan Noll took this video at her brothers graduation party and wasn’t expecting it to become as big as it did and was considered the next drinking game of the Summer! A fan of beer pong this is definitely one to add to the list!
For anyone wanting to get into licensing videos, making the news and earning some money then Mike’s last words of advice are to think, does it make you go…. “Oh. My. God”, “Holy Sh*t” or “Awwwwwww”? If so then it has potential to go big!
