How an unexpected hotel guest became a blessssing in dissssguise for these UK tourists…
Holidays are usually a time of relaxation and rejuvenation. For anyone overburdened by the cares of life, an exotic getaway is the ultimate destresser. The hotter the better. Nothing beats the feeling of sitting in the warm sunlight with a beer in hand, feeling your worries melt away…
But ask someone what is most likely to sober them up after a couple of drinks at the local bar, and ‘finding a snake in your hotel room’ would rank above any quantity of cheesy chips. No matter how enthusiastic you may be for ‘going local’, seeing a serpent slithering around your bedroom has a powerful way of instilling a craving for TV dinners and cups of English Breakfast tea.
It therefore came as quite a harrowing experience when UK couple Matt Lyle and Sarah Dixon, along with friend Andrew Derlien, found themselves sharing their room with a living, breathing, hissing snake.
Harnessing a biology degree and riding high on a wave of liquid confidence boosters, it was Matt who volunteered to be the Bear Grylls of the group. Armed with a small plastic bag, he began trying catch the deadly reptile. It was at this point that Sarah and Andrew, taking refuge on top of the bed, decided to start documenting the hazardous procedure.
Regardless of Matt’s success in disposing of the reptile (the group later admitted defeat and called in their housemaid, who managed to get it in a bucket and chuck it outside), the resulting footage captures in vivid detail the archetypal battle of man against nature. And it is truly thrilling, and hilarious, to watch.
Sensing an opportunity for social triumph, Sarah decided to upload the footage to Facebook, where it was quickly discovered by one of our researchers. A few hours after uploading the video to Newsflare, it was picked up by the MailOnline and used on their website.
With potential production company interest following suit, we decided to find out exactly how it feels to have your holiday experiences picked up by national media.
Why did you decide to start filming Matt’s snake grabbing attempts?
We knew it’d be hilarious. We’d had a few beers so were definitely feeling braver than usual and hadn’t even thought that it might be venomous and bite us! We started videoing right away when Matt decided catching the snake in the bag was the best thing to do!
How did you think social media would react the moment you posted it online?
We knew it’d be popular on our Facebooks so were keen to upload it right away but Indian Wifi wouldn’t let us. We thought it would get a good few likes but were surprised with how funny everyone has found it!
Did you have any feeling that the video could reach a national audience?
We considered sending it to Unilad as we thought it may have appeal as an ‘idiots abroad’ kinda video but we are still surprised at it’s success!
What was your reaction when you saw Matt’s face on the MailOnline frontpage?
Extremely shocked! A lot of my colleagues often look at funny stories on the Mailonline website and we were looking at one when we were sent the link. I couldn’t believe it had made it on there and everyone came over to look at it at my desk! I then posted it on my Facebook and it went mad!
Has Matt and his snake catching talents attracted any interest from local pest removal/rescue companies since the video was posted online?
Err no! I think Matt’s learnt there are definitely better ways of removing snakes than in a tiny bag but I don’t think he’ll be making a hobby of it!
