I think it was the great Michael Owen who once said “when you don’t score you hardly ever win.” It would be difficult to dispute this pearl of wisdom, but the Newsflare archive is full of counter-arguments. Take Newsflare member Brunovt77 for example, a non-league football supporter who regularly pockets money after filming forwards missing open-goals in spectacular fashion. When it comes to sporting fails on Newsflare, there are always winners.
It is no secret that failures of the sporting kind make for some of the most entertaining and engaging videos on the internet. It is not that we love to take pleasure in others’ mistakes, it is that watching the human body’s failure to do what is expected of it has a humbling effect that we can all share in. And that we love to take pleasure in others’ mistakes.
There are some that make us belly laugh, some that make us snort heavily through our nostrils, and some that may leave us with our heads in our hands. In the world of viral video, if it is enough to make you want to send it your friends, it has the potential to become the next internet sensation. So, in homage to probably the most shareable of internet genres, we’ve compiled a top 5 of some of our favourite sporting fails.
Batsman commits horrendous blunder
If anyone was ever looking for one-to-one coaching on ‘how not to bat’, give Eastwood cricket club a call. With the reactions of a narcoleptic sloth and embarrassingly poor hand-eye-coordination skills, this guy makes errant swing after errant swing, and finally ends up knocking off the bails with his own bat – which sounds like a metaphor but, sadly in this case, isn’t.
Whether or not the batsman – on a recent visit to Turkey – had witnessed at first hand a group of whirling dervishes in full flow and decided to incorporate their act into his batting technique is unclear. What we do know is that the filmer subsequently uploading his footage to Newsflare’s website, and – amid strong media interest – managed to get the hapless batsman onto an advert for breakfast cereal company Alpen.
Non-league goalkeeper makes cup final howler
It is every goalkeeper’s worst nightmare to make a dreadful blunder in a cup final. But when that blunder involves letting the ball trundle through your legs a la Massimo Taibi, the horror is every bit more intense. The goalkeeper for Hurley United (no need to name him) conceded in calamitous fashion to allow the aptly named Tamworth Arms Galacticos to go 8-2 up.
“Well it’s a shame…” the filmer can be heard repeating, in an attempt to console the head-in-hands goalie. This was clearly one he’d want to forget. Unfortunately for him, the filmer was also a Newsflare member, who promptly uploaded the video to our website and made several sales to national news outlets.
Basketball stuck on rim in final seconds of game
We all know the cliche. It is the last few seconds of the final game of the season and a player (preferably someone completely unexpected) pops up with a buzzer beater to send the entire stadium into hysterics. Many films have been based upon this scenario. But life isn’t a film, and sometimes physics doesn’t work out the way you want it to.
Just like in this high school basketball game, where a last second shot – rather than dropping into the net – seems to tear a fabric in the space-time continuum and stalls on the metal rim. What follows is a hush of disappointment, as the ball shows no signs of coming down. Some say it is still up there…
Man tries bowling. Erases the roof.
For anyone who’s ever handled a bowling ball, you’d know that the margin for error is pretty small. The chances of skewing your aim and missing the pins, let alone flinging one of these hefty balls skyward and causing structural damage to the bowling alley are quite slim.
In a piece of footage uploaded to Newsflare at the start of this year, a guy in France (a nation well known for strikes) decided his bowling technique could do with a bit more elevation. Filled with too much Joie de vivre, the man ends up causing a heavy downpour of ceiling tiles with his wayward attempt. Sacré bleu!
Girl tumbles over final hurdle to finish second
Not all fails end in total disaster. Often the best tests of an athlete is how they react to making a mistake, either mentally or physically. And for the final clip on our list, this person managed to turn a potentially catastrophic situation into something pretty spectacular.
After falling at the final hurdle (yes, literally), athlete Kelsey Sullivan managed to turn her subsequent tumble into a stylish somersaulting finish. The fall may have meant squandering her winning position, but – managing to finish at a highly respectable 2nd place – she won over the hearts of the viral video community.
If you manage to film a sporting fail, or indeed triumph, please consider uploading your footage to Newsflare. There is always huge media interest in these clips, and we would love to help sell them for you!
